Purpose and Preparations for Test(s):

Echocardiogram:  

IAC Accredited

Purpose
Ultrasound waves are used to examine the heart’s size, pumping strength, valve shape and the presence of blood flow.
Preparation No special preparations are necessary.  Be prepared to undress from the waist up and put on a short hospital gown.  The test should last approximately 30-45 min.

Nuclear Stress Test,
Non-Nuclear Stress Test
& Stress Echo Test: 
Purpose
These tests allow doctors to determine how well your heart functions when it is made to work harder during a test.  An electrocardiogram records the electrical activity of your heart.  Nuclear and Echo images at time of stress helps to assess any blockage in the heart arteries.
  Preparation for Stress Echo & Non-Nuclear Stress Test
Avoid eating or drinking (3) three hours prior to the test.  If you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least (6) six hours prior.  Do not take any beta blockers or nitrates one day (24) hours before the test unless otherwise instructed. Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.  The test should take approximately (30) thirty minutes.
  Preparation for Nuclear Stress Test
Avoid eating or drinking (6) six hours prior to the test.  If you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least (6) six hours prior.  No caffeine for (12) twelve hours prior.  Do not take any beta blockers, calcium channel blockers or nitrates one day (24hrs) before the test unless otherwise instructed.  Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.  The test will take 3-4 hours.
Holter Monitor: Purpose
Portable device used to record the electrical activity of the heart on tape.
  Preparation
No special preparation necessary.  Monitor is worn for 24 hours.  The monitor cannot get wet, so be sure to bathe prior.
Lower Extremity Doppler: Purpose
Ultrasound waves are used to look for blockage in the leg arteries.
  Preparation
No special preparations.  Be prepared to undress from the hip down.
Carotid Ultrasound: Purpose
Ultrasound waves are used to look for the blockage in neck arteries.
